Map of United Kingdom

Your personal security

The United Kingdom is one of the safest countries in which to live in the entire world, however, it is still a good idea to take practical precautions whenever you are in a new country.

Here is some practical advise

  • Inform your host family of your mobile phone number and make sure your host family's phone number is recorded in your mobile.
  • When you go out, inform your host family of where you are going and when they can expect you to return.
  • Plan your journey well, making sure you know how to get to your destination and how you will return.
  • If possible, travel within a group or with friends. Avoid walking by alone at night.
  • Always use well-lit streets and avoid taking shortcuts through quiet or dark areas.
  • Be aware of your surroundings - If you are listening to music, make sure it's not too loud.
  • Do not speak to people you do not know, or take lifts from strangers.
  • Never take all your money or passport out with you, and keep valuables items such as cameras out of sight.
  • Never leave your bag unattended in public places.

What to do if something happens to you while you are in the United Kingdom?

If you are a victim of theft, assault, or threatened in any way while you are in the United Kingdom, head towards a shop, police station or any public building and ask for help; somebody will contact the police for you. Do not worry if you have difficulties with the language, the police will provide an interpreter (a free service that police in the United Kingdom provide). If you are worried about contacting the police about something that has happened to you, tell your host family, a professor or a confident.

Who can you call for help?

  • In an emergency always dial 999 or 112
  • If you need a taxi, you can call 0800 654 321 for free, here you will be connected to the closest taxi company, wherever you find yourself.
  • Telephone 0845 30 30 900 for victim support.

Racial harassment is illegal in the United Kingdom and there are laws to protect you.

If you have been a victim of the following, because of your race or nationality, you must report the incident.

  • Physical abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Written abuse
  • Threats

If you have been a victim of racial harassment and are in an emergency, call 999

We remind you that your time in the United Kingdom should be fun and trouble-free, but if you have a problem then there are people to help you. You can call the police, ask your teacher for help or make contact with the Racial Harassment Team at your town council.
